Petworth House And Park

Spent a lovely Sunday at Petworth House and Park, a magnificent late 17th Century mansion with a stunning collection of art, sculptures and furnishings, including works by Turner and Blake. While not particularly photogenic from the outside (somewhat 'blocky', like Buckingham Palace), the interiors were spectacular. The walk up to the house took in the Ionic Rotunda and Doric Temple, and behind the house is Petworth Park, home to 400 fallow deer. We saw some deer from inside the house, but they had moved on once we were outside. (I have plenty of deer photos here and here.)Opposite the house are the servants' quarters, including a huge kitchen with all manner of ingenious contraptions, not least of which the large spit-roasting device was a highlight. We would like to thank all the excellent and friendly volunteers and guides for imparting so much fascinating information, and making the day so enjoyable. I would thoroughly recommend a visit!
