Iguassu Falls - Part One

The first thing I realised when I arrived at Iguassu was that the photography was largely irrelevant. Trying to capture within a frame the naked power of nature, with its deafening roar and slamming gusts of water vapour, is probably a futile exercise. I have tried it, of course, hence this post; but nothing could compare to being in front of such mighty waterfalls and experiencing their breathtaking majesty up close. The photos here were taken on the Argentinian side of the Falls; Brazil lays claim to around 20% of them and photos from that side will follow in the next post. The first few shots were taken from a helicopter flying above them, before walking up the ever-climbing gradient alongside them.Treading the boards along the walkways next to the raging surges while being blasted with water was as thrilling as it was drenching, and I must have looked like a hapless imbecile trying to constantly wipe my lens clean. But I managed a few shots and the Falls provided a generous abundance of rainbows to marvel at.I used a polarising filter in some shots and an ND Grad for others, trying to capture a silkier water flow with a slower shutter speed. But even so, the day was so bright that it was extremely tricky to block out enough light. The image stabiliser on the EM-5 allowed me to take such slow exposures hand-held, but that too was a battle against the forces of wind and water.I intended to bring the viewer in close to the water with my shots, rather than use a wide angle lens, which would distance the viewer from the subject and make the falls seem somewhat remote. Thus some of my shots were close ups of details or of the water itself. In any event, please don’t settle for anyone's photographs; go to Iguassu and see the spectacle for yourself. All of these were taken with the EM-5, Olympus 12-40mm F/2.8 and 40-150mm F/2.8.
