Paraty

The 'River of Fish', Paraty is a picturesque little town on Brazil's Costa Verde, known for its cobblestone pavements and colourful dwellings. Founded by Portuguese colonists in 1667, has barely changed in centuries, with a paved road to the town only coming in the early 1970s. It became an export town for the world's richest goldmines in 1696 and has experienced periodic economic revivals through trade in coffee, fish and more recently, cachaca (pronounced ka-sha-sa), a sweet spirit derived from sugar cane.Walking around the cobblestone streets it is easy to become lost; the town was deliberately designed like a maze in order to make it seem bigger. But there were plenty of quaint shops and colourful buildings to take in on the stroll, many of them beautifully reflected in the puddles of water. Outside Paraty, we had tremendous fun sliding down wet rocks into a waiting pool, as well as enjoying a massage under small waterfalls. We had time to visit a small distillery where cachaca was made, and after a quick swim at the beach we hiked up into the overlooking hills and found Pedra Que Engole - the Rock That Swallows - and promptly disappeared through it. All the images were taken with the EM-5 and Olympus 12-40mm F/2.8.
