Overlooking a picturesque town on one side and a postcard perfect marina on the other, Castle Rushen dominates the skyline in Castletown, the former capital of the Isle Of Man. On the way here, we stopped at Rushen Abbey, the remains of a monastery gifted by King Olaf in 1134. It provided a fascinating insight into the advent of Christianity on the island.Castle Rushen is a magnificently preserved castle, whose construction began in the 10th century and was completed in the 16th century. Fantastic views over the town and surrounding landscape can be had from the castle's top. We spend a short time visiting the House of Keys, where the Manx Parliament convene, and the Nautical Museum, which houses The Peggy yacht, the oldest surviving maritime craft in the Isle Of Man, and one the oldest surviving in the world. We also took in the Old Grammar School, originally built as a chapel around the 12th century, and now housing a classroom.Finally, we found the Manx Steam Railway, with a beautiful locomotive gushing its steam out.A fantastic place to spend our second day on the Isle Of Man.
