Just a couple of hours away from Buenos Aires by ferry, Montevideo, the capital city of Uruguay, is actually a charming little city. Arriving in the morning and wandering through the Old Town, Cuidad Vieja, is almost like walking through a very picturesque ghost town, with sparse activity and even fewer people. But as we made our way down Sarandi, a pretty little street flanked by sentries of palm fronds, the little street stalls and trinket sellers began to gradually emerge.Beyond the Old Town and Plaza De Independecia we didn’t find much to see, but it was a refreshing respite from the relatively heaving intensity of Buenos Aires. Like that city, Montevideo is an emerging metropolis with its beautiful architecture rubbing shoulders with modern glass towers. But the city seemed so much calmer and open, with no crowds and light traffic, and plenty of colourful graffiti.As the daytime heat intensified, we found refuge in a smart little restaurant where we naturally had to sample the local sandwich, chivito.As we neared the end of our time here, we happened upon some Brazilian samba dancers and musicians in a bar having loud, energetic fun. A suitably lively way to wish Montevideo goodbye, and the setting sun invited us back to Buenos Aires on our way out.
